Back in 1982, I was honoured to visit Berlin with the Territorial Army, going via the corridor from Checkpoint Alpha to Checkpoint Bravo by minibus, then returning a few days later by way of the British Military Train. It was diesel-hauled from Berlin, right through to Hannover, where we alighted.

Upon getting on this train and before departure, the doors were chained and padlocked on the inside, then checked by an Officer, before we could depart. The rules on the train were that NO cameras, or binoculars would be seen pointing out of the windows at any time, for risk of getting shot as a Spy. Between Berlin and the West German border, several Steam locos were seen and so using the centre of the coach to stand and look at them, I aimed my camera at a couple, took some pics, but they didn't come out very well.

To this day, I still have a couple of momentoes that we were given to keep. I have also since then, acquirred some Official paperwork from an American Officer who was serving on the train, when crossing the border.

This train operated 364 days a year, with the only day off, being Christmas Day. I often wonder whether or not, that since the wall came down, if this same train still runs, but without all the locking in?
