Volunteering on Preserved LinesOver the course of a year, millions visit the Preserved Railways for the pleasure they give, but how many decide to be a volunteer on them I wonder? I have done voluntary work on two, many years ago, but sadly had to give up due to a change in my work commitments not allowing me the time off.
I have noticed that when the call goes out for volunteers, there aren't too many willing to help run the ship as the saying goes, but they still want to ride on the trains. I feel it goes without saying that when the press or a television personality is going to be visiting, most people who do volunteer, will expect to speak with them, while the rest of the time they simply stay in the background out of the way.
While there are some members of different Groups who would like to help in some way, but can't through ill-health or whatever, where are those who are capable and what are they doing? As soon as something big comes off, there they are up the front and bragging: 'Oh, I am part of whatever Group. I did this and I did that. I support this, I support that, etc.', when in actual fact all they did was put their hand in their pocket once a year for paying their subscription to be a member.
I appreciatte volunteers can't be forced to do anything, but why oh why, do some who are fit enough and have the time, leave it to others and then criticise because it takes them a long while, when they could join and perhaps help to get a job done in half the time?
Even though I no longer volunteer for the original two Preserved Lines, I do like to support them and the volunteers who work on them. If you are one of the Volunteers, Well Done & Thank You!
