Steam Specials in the regionI was informed some weeks ago and reminded just last night that there will be a Steam Special coming to Ely from Kings Cross tomorrow, arriving approx 13.30.. I am sure it is to be Tangmere that is hauling, so I do hope some of you get to see it and get some photographs.

Thank you Mr M&GN, but to do this route, it would involve being turned again at March, then crossing at Manea, in order to go via Ely West Curve to Norwich, so will try to get verification of actual route.

Thank you Mr.M&GN, I will endeavour to go near Ely to see it as I worked behind the Beauty back in the 1990's and so, many Happy Memories. I avoid the station due to too many people and getting in the way of my lens.

A4 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley as seen today at Prickwillow, between Ely and Thetford. Just as it approached, so the driver - Bless him - gave us a treat with the whistle.

I was going to go to Prickwillow and sit in the signalbox to watch it but thing's ended up a bit busy at home so we stayed local.

Mr M&GN

I went to an old bridge near Wymondham and to a packed Norwich

It was rather nice this evening as it passed through Hitchin only a little late.

Advance Warning. 6100 Royal Scot is booked to do the same run as SNG did on Sunday 22nd February. If the timings are the same, it should work out fine for me returning to where I got some good photo's including the one posted above.

Its been known for a while royal scot, I know where Im going

I think that the Royal Scot run has been postponed!

No surprise really, loco restorations/overhauls almost always run later than planned. Not sure why they waste time announcing the tours when theres little chance of those locos being ready in time. They did the same with locos such as 70013 & 60019.
|
Bramleyman
|
Thanks for the info, I will be bloody annoyed if this is correct.
|
easternbuzz

Well on the ukrailtours website it shows it to be postponed. Its a downer but oh well better that it gets overhauled. It is silly about giving it tours as it is already run over schedule a few times, originally last summer!

Plus according to The Railway Company website, that the return of Oliver Cromwell on March 21st from Norwich to London Liverpool Street at 08.30 has now been deferred until Saturday 16th May, Are they trying to curtail the entire Steam Programme to East Anglia?
Seen on their website for the return to East Anglia of Oliver Cromwell and which read: We are very sorry to inform you that the Easterling train has been postponed until Saturday 16th May 2009 due to essential engineering works on the Norwich – London line south of Ipswich. The new date for this tour is Saturday 16th May which Network Rail has confirmed is free of engineering works.

Mr M&GN
|
Im glad its on an engineering free day as Im on the trip and want it to go perfectly.
Unfortunately I hear ticket barriers are going to Norwich meaning an end to that spotting place.
|
Bramleyman
|
While I am all for barriers, it doesn't mean the end to spotting. Just buy the cheapest CDR and go on the platform, but don't board the train. If challenged, you are waiting for a mate who is late.
|
Mr M&GN
|
I guess it will mean better pictures as less people

I am Bloody fuming. On Saturday, Scots Guardsman was on a special charter from Kings Lynn to Melton Mowbary and never got to hear about it until AFTER the event. There was NOTHING in any magazine I take, the local rag (Comic more like), or the other railway forums until late Saturday when I finally found a few sentances about it. Even the Kings Lynn train drivers never got to hear about it, otherwise one would have told me on Wednesday, because he knows me and liking trains so much. I live 2 miles from the line and Would have been there to see it.

This coming Saturday 23rd, 60013 Oliver Cromwell is booked to steam from Norwich to London, via Ely (08.30.'ish, so I have been advised) & Cambridge.

From what I've heard, the Restoration has gone t*** up. Rumours suggest that some bright spark decided to use Araldite to stick the two cast halves of the chimney together. The loco has been moved as the previous company did such a poor job. Apparently she won't move faster than 25mph.

The 'Royal Scot' is currently being steamed along the WSR - West Somerset Railway - and after a tyre on the lorry transporting it burst and caught fire, thus causing further damage to it.

Think you need to update your info
This happened at the end of March. Royal Scot is not at the WSR and has long since been repaired from the fire damage . She attended the Llangollen's big steam gala in April before heading back to Crewe where she still remains. Recently Crewe heritage centre held a special weekend with 6233 "Duchess of Sutherland", 6201 "Princess Elizabeth" & 6100 "Royal Scot" all together.
This shot was taken about a week ago of 6100 at Crewe.

Thank you Kieran. I only wrote what I did, as that was the last I heard and so Thank You for the update. To be 100% honest with you, I have had other more serious matters to deal with over the last few weeks, so I have been unable to concentrate as much as normal.

I completely understand.
It would be nice to think that now 6100 has been moved into the sheds, work may commence on fitting the equipment needed for main line use.

Britannia Class 70013 'Oliver Cromwell' passes Prickwillow while on a run between Norwich and London, via Ely and Cambridge recently. This picture was taken and kind permission given to use it on here by a Good Mate of mine, being Mr. G. Pettit.

here is the same loco on its run from Kings Cross to Norwich, via Cambridge today, but not as good as my mate's photo above is, because I pressed the shutter approximately 1 second too late.

Quite recently, there gas been a hive of Steam activity around the region and this week is no exception. On Tuesday next (8th Dec), A4 Bittern was due to be in Ely, but according to info received tonight, this will now be Tangmere again. I have yet to see bittern the same as Tornado, but not bothered about the change, for the simple reason, it is still going to be steam, even though I have now seen Tangmere twice already.
Last weekend, a mate and I went to Grantham, just to see A4 Sir Nigel Gresley steam through and the close-up I took came out blurred, but at least we got to see it in steam.
