On the subject of level crossings...

I thought I'd share this with you, from the NNR round robin "PoppyLines". It is on the subject of reinstating the line between NNR Sherringham Station and the current Network Rail one:

Quote:
LEVEL CROSSING
The latest news on the level crossing is that Network Rail are still supporting the option of an occasional use crossing. We have recently met with Norfolk Orbital Railway representatives and have agreed these principles on which we will move forward. These principles support the first phase of getting the rails across the road and using them as an occasional crossing. Other phases such as a hoint Anglia and NNR station and the fill reinstatement of the orbital route are supported as long term goals.

We have also had a meeting with both Network Rail and the Office of Rail Regulation. That was a most usefull meeting which has pointed us in the right direction in terms of the regulatory requirements of an occasional use crossing.

Following this we met with County Council representatives and are awaiting theit input regarding the necessary planning requirements. All in all it has been a pretty busy and successful period on our efforts to connect to the national rail network, thanks in no small part to the efforts of Steve Ashling who has been able to guide us in the right direction.

I can only presume that the NNR Sherringham Station would be used at peak times during holidays etc when longer trains would be needed to carry more passengers to the coast as Sherringham only has accomidation for two car units.

I believe (please correct me if anyone knows any different) that the crossing would only be used 8 times per year for railtours. Yes, it would be nice for a "hub" station but I believe the purists wouldn't like the modern traction over their side of the road. I hope that both modern trains and heritage can work side by side. I would love to see a time when you can get on at Norwich and go to Cromer, Sherringham, Holt, Dereham, Wymondham and back to Norwich without a single change of train!
Owen

Unfortunatly, that wouldn't be possible due to the Holt Bypass which runs along the old line where the old station used to be. Still, something to look forward to for the future maybe. It might require some grand earthworks, but by 'eck, the Great Central seem to be doing something like that!

To be honest, yes it would be nice to have old and new running along side each other, but I'd prefer the NNR Heritage Station to remain in use for NNR activites only. Whilst I have nothing wrong with the old and the new running along side each other (doing this would be quite a momentus occasion), by using the NNR Station it could result in problems further on in the future.

My dad occasionaly talks about the old level crossing - mostly about squishing penny coins on the rails with school mates Shocked

With the Railtours, I also don't understand how the locomotives would run around at Cromer. With no passing loop, they'd either have to do the manouvre outside Cromer, or reinstate the Loop at East Runton. The other alternative would be to run a NNR locomotive on the front up to Cromer, with the Charter Engine facing the Holt end of the line on the end of the train, uncouple the NNR engine at the Cromer Terminus and let the Charter engine off on it's way.

i have heard a quote of £3 mill to get to holt
NOR have said you could run along the bypass but from the google earth  its impossible, housing and roads etc. i would of though you could build a cutting and bridge under the bypass and several other roads or build a massive enbankment and bridge it all costing millions that the nnr will probably never have unless i win the £92 million next friday Very Happy

An extension to M.Constable is pretty dire, not much of a chance there to be honest. A good vision for the future but it'd be a hell of a lot of work. The most plausable extension would be for the mid-Norfolk to run up to Fakenham, that'd be most probable.
Mr M&GN

I have no doubt that that extension will take place (mnr to fakenham) although great ryburgh is a headache, it would be fantatic riding all the way to fakenham and certainly put mnr in the the high league. 3 market towns on one line would be a real winner

I saw on Teletext today, that the Go-ahead for the two lines to be joint at Sheringham has finally been given, and due to be done in February 2009. If this is true, then GOOD LUCK to the NNR. YOU DESERVE IT FOLKS!
Mr M&GN

Good stuff, this may open the window for cromwell to visit NNR

Great News!

I wonder who had the "eurika" moment to propose an occasional use crossing rather than the various complicated expensive proposals for a full crossing.

That person deserves a pat on the back as the crossing is just weeks away and despite its operational limitations its significance is enormous and may lead to a fully operational crossing one day
Bramleyman

A pat on the back, then a pint in the hand.

Well Done to everybody involved in getting Ring Haw back in steam. I have some photo's of this loco taken at Weybourne somewhere and must get them on here.

Re the level crossing going in, I WILL be planning a visit sometime in 2009 to see this, plus introduce myself to any members of this forum who are also visiting on the day I get there and more than likely a Saturday.
Owen

I had a go in Ring Haw before the boiler ticket was passed when she was under test in the yard - a lovely bit of kit and can be very easily operated by one person due to the brake and reg placement. Firing is a bit of an art, or so I've heard. Should be having a go in the new year, should be fun!
Mr M&GN

I hear the first steps  will be to extend the head shunt over the green in Jan

I have also heard that the trains from Norwich will be using Platform 2, but only after the track has been realigned by some 9 inches, to allow the crossing to be 'Installed' and line up with it.

This was the original plan but i have a feeling they were intending on using platform 3?

I think this has now changed, and Norwich - Sheringham services wont be using the NNR Sheringham station, and will remain using the present modern one. This is mainly due to the fact that the crossing can only be used 12 times a year. Plus i also have a feeling some members of staff at the NNR wanted to keep modern and heritage seperate.
kieranhardy

Looks like the construction of the level crossing wont begin until early 2010 now.

Yep - read the .pdf brief earlier. Its a sound decision, with the long term advantages outweighing the short-term ones. We can wait a year!

(Fingers crossed, in a year's time I might be passed out to fire a charter train from Sheringham to Holt!) Cool
Bramleyman

Disappointing maybe, but I'm sure it will be worth it in the end.

Apparently the Norfolk County Council have pledged £25,000 towards the project, providing the rest of the money is raised.

The current funds stand at £55,000.
Owen

NCC recently spent £70,000 on redoing laybys on the Cromer-Sheringham road, so £25,000 is probably a drop in the ocean to them. Top marks for the pledge though!

I would Sincerely like to see the breakdown of the massive costs of these lay-by jobs, because like MP's expenses, I Very Strongly believe they could be cut and STILL get the same quality of work from those who actually carry it out.
