Oil Lamp Lit Semaphore SignalsI received a telephone call of some interest today. A member of my local Model Railway Club who is also a Track Welding Inspector, was working over near Thetford today and two guys came towards him carrying an Oil Lamp, which they proceeded to place behind the semaphore close to where he was. He was quite surprised and so rang to tell me about it. Even though I am a regular visitor to March and where there are still semaphores to be seen, I had never thought about how the signals are lit at night, but from now on, I will be making it a new interest and find out how these are lit.

On the Norwich to Great Yarmouth/Lowestoft lines we have a mix of colour lights and semephores. The semephores are either LED (Slowly changing over and very bright) or paraffin lit. If you stand on Oulton Broad platform you can see the little paraffin lamp still glowing away. You may even be lucky enough to see the NR guy change the lamp.
Another interesting fact is that the colour glass for the green aspect is actually blue. Combined with the yellow flame of paraffin the light appears green. The red and green aspect glasses are different shapes to prevent the wrong glass being put in the wrong hole (i.e Red showing green).
