Welcome Owen. The picture of the lone 90 was off to Ilford to pick up a coach after it's tyres had been on the wheel lathe.

I wondered why there would be a lone Loco going along the Mainline. I don't normally do Trainspotting as such, but I went round and abouts on my Bike to see if I could find a good photography spot for when a BR V2 Green Arrow Special is meant to be coming down the line on the 5th May.

There are various reasons we send out light locos:
- Going to works. We have been sending them to Ipswich where Freightliner then use it as a freight loco to go to works (eg Crewe).
- Picking up coaches. Sometimes coaches are shunted out of sets due to brake failures, hot axle boxes etc. Other times such as this occassion the coach didn't come back with the rest of the tyre turning set from Ilford.
-Testing. Happens quite commonly but usually only as far as Diss or Stowmarket.
-Thunderbird. If there is not a class 47 available they send a spare class 90 instead.
