When I moved here in July last year, I allocated one of the brick-built sheds for my model railway to be put in. I had the baseboard in within weeks, but failed to get any track laid until a couple of days ago. Due to the lack of space in there, I had already decided on 'N gauge' because of getting so much more on it. What I had failed to do was measure the width of the board until I started to lay the track and found I needed a bit wider board, so as we had a couple of old worktops in the garage, I set about measuring them and found one I had to cut just a small amount off.

I have decided on a small loop with two sidings off either side. I have plenty of buildings to choose from and add when I build the small town, but no passenger train as the only one I have and a Green DMU, fails to run properly, so I have to make do with just my Green Class 08 and a variety of wagons. Some of the wagons keep uncoupling, so until I can sort things out later, I keep them in one of the sidings.

I just need to get a photo of the start and then the progress as I go on.

N gauge wagons have a habit of uncoupling themselves. They are so light, which is one problem. Some of the older versions of the horrible N couplings don't work very reliably. Mixing wagons of different makes perhaps doesn't help. The short length of the wagons seems to make for more possibility to move up and down enough to uncouple. I've often wondered about fixing some wagons toether in rakes using something that might look less horrible than the standard couplings. There are various other makes about but they are all pretty fiddly and seem to be designed with auto uncoupling in mind. Since all I want to do is run trains then that's not an issue for me. Shunting is quite fun in OO but too fiddly in N.

I dismantled my largish N layout a couple of years ago and haven't yet got round to building another. I think the time is getting near.
