Hastings Unit to return to Norwich? The 3x 153's on loan are to go back soon leaving a shortage of units. Many ideas were muted such as pacers, top and tail 31's.... but it looks like in the next few weeks the Hastings unit will return to work passenger services. No-one knows what diagram or lines yet but my guess is the Norwich rural lines to the coast (not East Suffolk due to RETB signalling). Will confirm more when I know.

I can confirm that today I have spoken with certain people within "one" and the Hastings unit will not return.
It is likely to be top and tail Class 31's instead.

If 31's, I'm interested.

ONE nearly had the Hastings unit but (as with the loan 153's) ONE didn't get there on time. The t&t 31's are indeed on the cards but the set that was wired for 1 driver operation isn't around. They have to be through wired for fire protection unless a rider (2nd driver) can be provided. We shall have to wait and see.

A "rider" needs only be provided on the rear locomotive if that locomotive is actually running. Incidentally, it doesn't have to be a driver that signs the traction either. It can be a driver that is "conversant with the fire fighting equipment on that locomotive". So a depot driver could do that. If it is shut down, there is no issue anyway, as a rider need not be provided.
Obviously, it is unpractical to keep shutting down firing up, BIS in, BIS out etc, for a shuttle between Norwich and Yarmouth, however, we live in times of "green thinking" now. As you say, we will have to wait and see what develops.

They are a funny lot at Norwich and when they have had to provide a rider for 47's in the past they insist on 47 trained men. I can't see 31's being any different. I know they have had problems in the past when they have run a 47 DOR but it hasn't fired up on the other end so they are a bit nervy! I hope they only run a single 31 to Yarmouth as that would mean one of us Depot Drivers being on the job for the run around at GY!
Going back to providing a rider: How hard can pressing a fire extinguishing button be?
