In 1966, the Minister of Transport, who was if memory serves me correctly was one Barbara Castle, refused to give her consent to the then proposed withdrawal of a number of passenger services in the Eastern Region and between Ipswich & Lowestoft. However, consent WAS given for the closure of the 8.25 mile line between Saxmundham and Aldburgh. A number of stations were also closed, between Ipswich and Norwich, then Ipswich and Cambridge and so leaving what to some, is a semi-fast service.
In my opinion, back then, far too many places in the East Anglian region were left without a decent Public Transport service and to this day, nothing has changed. _________________ Please help us to 'Raise a Wagon Load of Cash' and so we can get the lease, then start running. Another of the little lines that closed many years ago, was the Denver to Stoke Ferry branch. Opened on 1 August 1882 and absorbed by GER in 1893, the line closed to passengers back as early as 22 Septmeber 1930 and to goods on 19 April 1965. All that is left at Stoke Ferry is the old station, goods shed and the yard as seen on the pictures below, that I took today. It was only because the by-pass was troublesome due to a massive traffic-jam, that I passed through the village and decided on the spur of the moment to get these pictures.
The station is now a private residence, but as for the old goods shed, this was at one stage a thriving local business, sadly no longer around.
